What is BT Call Sign?

"Call Sign" is BT's brand name for their distinctive ringing service. This service provides a second number on your existing phone line. So you have one line with your existing number plus a new "Call Sign" number. When a caller dials your Call Sign number the ring pattern is different and this can be recognised by devices such as the Lineplex CS200 and BT TwinTalk so that the call can be routed to a particular a phone, fax machine or other device.

So you can use BT Call Sign, in conjunction with a CS200 or TwinTalk, to separate calls for any purpose you wish. Some popular examples include:

It's important to remember that you still have only one line so only one call can take place at a time. Both the CS200 and TwinTalk provide "barge-in protection": another party connected on the other port of the CS200 or via another TwinTalk cannot interrupt or listen-in to a call in progress.

You can have Call Sign on an ADSL line. Like all analogue telephone equipment, the CS200 or TwinTalk must be connected via a microfilter.

BT charges a small amount monthly for the Call Sign service, similar to what you'd pay for caller display or call waiting.

If you are with a cable company or other telco, they may or may not provide a distinctive ringing service.
