Suitability Notes

Please read these notes first to determine whether the FS300 or FS300-i will be suitable for your application. (The notes apply to both models equally.)

Suitable

The FS300 or FS300-i may be suitable for your application if either ...

• It is to be used in continental europe (other than the UK and Ireland); OR ...
• It is to be used in the UK on a fax line; that is, a line on which incoming voice calls are not expected. (Outgoing voice calls are not a problem.)

If either of the above apply, please read the rest of this page to ensure that the features, specification and requirements for the FS300/FS300-i are also suitable for your intended application.

Not Suitable

The FS300 will not be suitable for your application if ...

• It is to be used in the UK or Ireland on a line on which incoming voice calls are expected.

Description of the FS300 Fax Switch

The FS300 Fax Switch is a two-port switch. Connected to a single incoming telephone line it provides two ports (RJ11 jacks with BT socket adapters provided). Port 1 is used for a telephone and answering machine. Port 2 is for a fax machine. The FS300 can be connected to the BT master socket or to an extension socket.

The FS300 operates as follows. It auto-answers all incoming calls on the first ring and listens for incoming fax tones. Voice callers hear a continental-style ringback. Fax calls are switched to the Fax port. If the FS300 does not detect fax tones it rings the telephone(s) or other devices on Port 1.

If, after a voice call, the caller also wishes to send a fax, simply replace the handset. The call will be transferred to the Fax port, the caller will hear your fax tones and can Send the fax.

Voice calls should be answered within 6 rings as, after this time, the call will be transferred to the Fax port. For this reason you will need an answering machine on port 1 always ready to answer before the 6th ring.

FS300 International

The FS300 International (FS300-i) is an FS300 fax switch with RJ11 connectors plus optional adapters which allow it to be used in various countries and with phone/fax equipment from various other countries of origin. It is available with a choice of power packs, UK 3-pin or Euro 2-pin. There is even a choice of language for the instruction leaflet, currently just English and Italian.

Countries for which the FS300 International may be specified include France, Ireland, Spain and Switzerland. The range of countries will be extended according to demand.

Requirements, Recommendations and Limitations

• Standard BT phone socket on an analogue line or the phone socket on an ADSL line - but see our page on ADSL Issues (opens in new window) - or various international phone sockes for the FS300-i.
• Standard 13A mains power socket (or Euro 2-pin for FS300-i).
• Recommended for use in the United Kingdom (and various other countries for FS300-i) however only limited support can be provided for users outside the UK.
• Recommended for use in the UK on fax lines that have some voice traffic. Not recommended for UK lines that receive many incoming voice calls, especially where the callers may be confused by the continental ring back! Clearly, those reservations do not apply to the FS300-i used outside the UK.
• It is recommended to have an answering machine as well as a phone on Port 1 as unanswered voice calls are transferred to Port 2 after 6 rings.

Known Compatibility Issues.

• BT Synergy 4500: The combined answerphone does not answer when connected to the FS300.

Important warranty information.

• Like all telephone equipment connected to a landline, this product may be damaged by voltage surges during thunderstorms. Such damage is not covered by the warranty.
