Description of The Stick II

[The Stick II]   The Stick II main unit.

The Stick II is a programmable, five-port switch for use with one or two incoming telephone lines. The five ports (RJ11 with BT adapters provided) are set up for Voice (phone / answering machine) on ports 1 and 2, and Fax on port 4 but you can use other combinations of telephone devices including modems, card readers etc.

In its default configuration, when an incoming call is answered, The Stick II will recognise incoming fax calls and divert them to port 4. Modems dialling in must issue the correct Security Access Code to reach the port to which your modem is connected, thus your PC and data are protected. Voice calls are simply handled as normal by you or your answering machine.

The Stick II can be programmed to auto-answer calls on the first ring (on either or both lines) and screen for fax tones or DTMF before ringing the appropriate port. However, in this mode, voice callers hear a US-style ring back. So this mode of operation is more suited to remote sensing and data logging applications; it is not recommended for lines likely to receive incoming voice calls.

The Stick II can process two calls (on the two lines) simultaneously. The routing of incoming and outgoing calls is programmable. For example, outgoing calls from faxes and modems could be restricted to line 2. There is a call-in / dial-out feature so that you can take advantage of beneficial call rates when you are away from the office.

You can manually divert an incoming call to another port by dialling its code. The caller can also route the call if he knows the code.

Each port has a programmable access code of up to four digits. So you can secure the access to your telephone devices by only issuing the codes to authorised callers.

The Stick II provides barge-in protection, which means that a call in progress cannot be interrupted by another device. (Obviously this only applies to devices plugged into other ports on The Stick II.)

The Stick II has an Unanswered Call Transfer feature. This means you can program The Stick II to route unanswered calls to another port after a specified number of rings. Programming The Stick II is achieved simply, via your telephone keypad.

The Stick II is designed in the USA but is sold here ready for the UK market with BT connectors, UK mains adapter and with a manual re-written for the UK.

The Stick II will work on ordinary, analogue (PSTN) telephone lines. It will work on broadband (ADSL) lines off the voice socket of the microfilter. It cannot be connected directly to an ISDN line but could be used on the Voice port of an ISDN router.
